Bluretina wants you to see the world the way she does. Bluretina distills serious, complex ideas and emotions down to a cartoon. Born in Istanbul, a summer child, who began swimming at just 20 days old; you can see how Bluretina tells her story throughout her work.
Details may go unnoticed until you get closer to her work (look closely at the nostrils in Locolotion). Pop culture bleeds into Bluretina’s work after spending years sitting too close to the Tv because of her myopia which influences her web3 persona (blur retina). A friend to watch the rip in space-time continuum unintentionally conjures up a familiar cartoon cat and mouse from the long-running show The Simpsons.
“I was the first child and a summer child,” Bluretina says, “with working parents I was basically all alone most of the time by myself until my brother was born. Watching cartoons like The Cable Guy, drawing and painting and spending my days inside my imagination made me who I am today. From an early age I was creating my own things, games, toys, friends…”
At the heart of Bluretina’s art is a yearning for connection and understanding with others. Many of us struggle to tell our stories to people we know, people we care about and most of all people we barely know. The safest way to do so is to distance ourselves from it and hope that others will notice.
”I always make sketches, and then some of those sketches start to become somebody,” she says, “Sometimes it’s somebody I can never be and sometimes It’s somebody I’ve been all my life. They all are born through me but they are also born themselves. I don’t control them anymore after I create them. Now they all have to write their own stories.”
“I think we all fight or make peace with only one thing in life,” Bluretina continues, “It’s existing and knowing the inevitable ending. The apple of wisdom is poisonous indeed but also tastes so yummy! Maybe this is why I make cat characters mostly, I think curiosity is the key and also the life and death of the cat. So my characters are mostly yin and yang.”
“They are also survivors. They are winners, and fighters, they got their inner demons but are mostly good people, they like and hate themselves, and they are brave enough to tear their skin and cool enough to not care about the bleeding nose. They are here to share their hearts so they shout with bright colors. They are in that moment captured in time as coke high but they are also under influence of the pop culture as we are, as I am. Living in their parallel universes as we all do live inside our happy bubbles.”
The distortion Bluretina applies to the bodily shapes of her characters are reminiscent of Picasso but also bigger in her theme, seeing each other and connecting, “Pinchy pinchy is all of us, beating ourselves with ourselves. It has a kind of cruel pleasure in it too. I am an artist fighting her demons most of the time. Pinchy pinchy is a sister of mine trying to provide this world with all she has but the world is never satisfied this is painful maybe but it is life so she is having fun like she is in the fucking club and dancing to the beat and rhythm of this beautiful mess we are in. Usually, my characters have big smiles and even golden grilled ones cause the first impression is always important in this life.”
“Let’s remember our regrets together, make peace with ourselves, but never give up the fight cuz the world is so cool to let go. Yeah, the world is ending maybe but we like to rock and roll and share our beautiful and fucked up stories with each other.”
